What do you think of when you think of your favorite SuperHero? Is Spiderman, Superman, Ironman, The Hulk, one of the Fantastic Four, X-Men or some other imaginary character in a comic book your favorite Superhero? What things can your superhero do? What is the definition of a superhero? (Someone who can do great things that normal people can’t.)
You’ve seen Superman, the crimefighter on TV, as he flies through the air faster than a speeding bullet. But Superman has certain limitations. For one, he is not real.
Superheroes do not have
to just be found within the pages of a comic book or on the screen at the movies,
or in a DVD to be shown on your TV. There is a Superhero who really exists!
This is not a make-believe person! He is real! This person was born human just
like you and me. This superhero is so powerful that He said, “Let there
be light,” and there was light. He spoke all of creation into existence!
He took dirt, fashioned a man and breathed life into him, creating the first
human being. He created the first woman by taking a rib from the first man and
making a woman out of it and breathing His life into her. He wrote His laws
on tablets of stone with His own finger and then gave them to us. He parted
the Red Sea so the Israelites could cross on dry ground while He made the water
hold still on each side as a huge wall of water. He appeared as a cloud by day
and a pillar of fire by night for over 40 years, leading the Israelites through
the desert to the promised land. He walked on water and through walls, healed
people of horrible diseases, cured the blind, and even raised the dead to life
again. He turned two loaves of bread and five fish into enough food to feed
5,000 people. He told a storm to calm down and it obeyed Him. He turned water
into wine. This superhero loved you enough to die so that your sins could be
forgiven. He rose from the dead to show you that you too can have eternal life
with him. Is there anything on this earth that Jesus did not create?
Superman can see through walls, but our Superhero walked right through them
without leaving a mark. He rose from the dead. Can any of your make-believe
superheroes do any of these things?
Have you considered what your Superhero, Jesus Christ, can do for you? If you have a problem, can your comic book superhero do anything about it? Can Jesus? Of course He can. He is God in the flesh. He can do anything that God can do! He even promises those who believe and obey Him eternal life with Him forever!
How? He provided the way by dying for your sins. He was sent into the world to save it.
John 3:16-21
16 “For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son,
so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
17 God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world
through Him.
18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in Him. But anyone
who does not believe in Him has already been judged for not believing in God’s
one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light
came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for
their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go
near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right
come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”
We’ve learned that all of us have sinned and the wages of sin is death. We humans have messed up and we need to be rescued.
Romans 5:15-21
15” But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s
gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But
even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many
through this other man, Jesus Christ. 16 And the result of God’s gracious
gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s
sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right
with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. 17 For the sin of this one
man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful
grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph
over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ."
When Adam sinned, it affected all of humanity from that point forward. When Jesus died for your sins, it affected all of humanity backward and forward. Sin brings death. God’s grace brings life and the possibility of eternal life with Him forever.
18 "Yes, Adam’s
one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness
brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. 19 Because one
person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed
God, many will be made righteous.
20 God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were.
But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more
abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death,
now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with
God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Our Superhero did something none of the other superheroes on TV, in movies or in comic books can do. Our Superhero was raised from the dead. After being dead for 3 days and 3 nights, he came back to full healthy life, showing us that eternal life is available to us too.
1 Corinthians 15:23
23 “But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the
first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes
back.”
You can talk to your Superhero directly. He hears and answers your prayers. He gives you peace when troubling times hit you. He enables you to resist Satan’s attacks. He enables you to say “NO” to sin.
Phillippians 4:6-7
6 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell
God what you need, and thank Him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience
God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will
guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
This life here and now is to give you time to develop a relationship with God Himself, through knowing Jesus Christ. Jesus is our example of who and what God is like. His life is an example for you to follow. One of the biggest decisions you will ever make is the one when you repent of your sins and decide to accept Jesus as Your Savior. No other decision will impact your life as much as that one will. God hopes that you decide for Him, because that will open your life to the most rewarding and awesome relationship you will ever have. This relationship will last through death and into eternity.
